Solar Sails!

In secret I’m a Trekkie. Well, not so much in secret. I mean, I don’t go to the cons and all, but I do like sci-fi stuff. Hmmm…perhaps I should check out a sci-fi book from the library today? Anyway! Back on topic. I found out (thanks to <a href="http://aidan.strateia.org/exit.php?url_id=21&entry_id=43" title="http://www.slashdot.org" onmouseover="window.status=’http://www.slashdot.org’;return true;" onmouseout="window.status=”;return true;">Slashdot) that the first ever Solar Sail has been deployed! I think this is kindda cool. In theory Solar Sails might actually enable us to travel to other solar systems. I’m no scientist, and I don’t know exactly how they work. But basically it works just like normal sails. Only the "wind" that a Solar Sail catches is actually solar light particles. These particles propel the sail and, hopefully, whatever is attached to it. With that in mind, perhaps we’ll one day see a thriving space trade…adventures of sailors and pirates…only instead of islands in the tropics we have planets. Didn’t Disney make a movie like that recently? Hmmm….
Anyway, the article is <a href="http://aidan.strateia.org/exit.php?url_id=22&entry_id=43" title="http://www.isas.jaxa.jp/e/snews/2004/0809.shtml" onmouseover="window.status=’http://www.isas.jaxa.jp/e/snews/2004/0809.shtml’;return true;" onmouseout="window.status=”;return true;">here, if you want to read it for yourself. Also interesting is that it was the Japanese that deployed this. Go Japan! I for one would sign up to go to space if colonies are ever established during my lifetime. I mean, astronauts/colonists need Jesus too! I could be the first Youth Pastor in space. Now THAT would be something to blog about.
