Ack to Windows XP SP2!

I just read this article about SP2 incompatibilties. The article can be found <a href=";entry_id=47" title="; onmouseover="window.status=’;;return true;" onmouseout="window.status=”;return true;">here.

So, my prediction is that there are going to be a fair number of people who don’t want to install SP2 just because some of their games are going to have issues (take my wife for instance). I think that this, combined with the fact that SP2 can’t be installed on pirated copies of Windows (ie, the entire world outside of North America and Europe), will mean that Windows viruses and worms still propogate themselves at astounding speeds and that the majority of Windows boxes out there remain insecure. Now, corporate users will install SP2, and they should. But home users, especially those who are still using dialup will take days just to download the patch. Then they’ll have it mess up their machines (well, not mess up, but it will appear to have done that when their programs don’t work) and so they’ll uninstall it and/or just reinstall the entire operating system and go on as usual.

So anyway, that’s what I think is going to happen. I could be completely wrong of course. I hope that all goes well with SP2, I really do. But I’m just not sure that it’s going to go as well as I hope.
