The Dark Knight

Mandy and I saw The Dark Knight last night. Dark, intense, thrilling, amazing; these are all words that describe the experience. Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker was absolutely amazing. It is exactly what all the reviewers are saying. He deserves an Academy award for it. The only negative thing I could say about the performance is that because of his death, we will never have the chance to see him in this role again. Even if everyone else in the movie had been lack luster, you should see it for Ledger’s Joker alone.

The other actors are not lack luster though. Christian Bale does an excellent job as Batman. He manages to play the character as human, and yet somehow superhuman. Batman was always among my favorite comic book heroes (which is to say that I actually read a few of his comics), and Bale fulfills what I always imagined Batman to be. I’ve also found that Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine all very much portrayed their characters impressively. Freeman as Lucius Fox is particularly entertaining.

I can’t recommend this film enough. It’s surpassed the Last Samurai and Lord of the Rings for my #1 movie spot. One word of caution, younger audience members may be quite disturbed by the movie. I think the rating (PG-13) is quite appropriate, though even some 13 year olds may find the movie too intense.
